OverviewThe palazzo's history reads like a précis of Florence itself. It was built in the 1470s by the Portinari family - bankers who had made their fortune managing branches of the Medici banking network across Europe - on the site of the original home of Folco Portinari, father of Beatrice, Dante's muse.
In 1546 it passed to Jacopo Salviati, whose daughter Maria Salviati was the mother of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. His statue still stands at the center of the first courtyard. The Salviati held the palazzo for over two hundred years, commissioning Alessandro Allori - one of the great Florentine fresco painters - to decorate its halls.
It later served as the seat of the Ministry of Grace and Justice during Florence's brief stint as Italy's capital, before passing in 1870 to the Bank of Tuscany, which held it for nearly 150 years.
It was restored and reopened in 2022. The frescoes, marble floors, and carved ceilings are original.
Why We Chose ItIt’s the heart of the weekend and where we'll be staying. It sets the tone for everything - intimate, historic, and completely transportive.

OverviewHotel La Gemma occupies a 19th-century Florentine building that one housed the Guild of Hoteliers. The Cecchi family, a creative Florentine dynasty spanning fashion, architecture, and art, designed the hotel around the palette of the nearby Duomo - sage, cream, and blush - with botanical-print silk-screened walls, Art Deco-shaped custom furnishings, and a modern Florentine restaurant.
The results strike balances that are genuinely difficult to achieve: lux but not ostantacious, central but not busy, memorable but not eccentric.
A full-service spa with treatment rooms, steam room, and sauna sits below the hotel, and the restaurant recently earned a Michelin star.
Why We Chose ItLa Gemma is a few minutes walk from the palazzo and directly across from Caliamala, which means the whole group stay close without feeling like one building. But it earns its place on this list in its own right - it is a genuinely beautiful hotel with a strong design point of view and exceptional service.
For guests who want a quieter, more private base without sacrificing any of the comforts, this is the right choice.

OverviewHotel Calimala is actually two buildings - Calimala East, housed in a restored 16th-century palazzo, and Calimala West, in a 19th-century Gothic building - both redesigned by architect Alex Meitlis using original materials including pietra serena and Tuscan marble.
The hotel holds one Michelin Key, awarded in 2024.
The interiors mix original architectural features like exposed stone walls with custom-designed modern furniture and lighting , and a collection of contemporary art runs throughout the rooms and common areas.
The standout is the rooftop - Angel Roofbar & Dining serves everything from breakfast through aperitivo to dinner with panoramic views over the historic center.
Why We Chose ItThe rooftop at Calimala is where the welcome party is happening - and once you have been up there, you will understand why. It has the kind of energy and view that makes a first evening in Florence feel exactly right.
Beyond that, Calimala offers the most flexibility of the three hotels - more rooms, more availability, and a lively atmosphere from the moment you arrive.
For guests who want to be in the middle of everything, it is the right choice.
